SQS - Welding Process Quality Management System
On July 1, 2009 came into force on the Ministerial Decree 14/01/2008 on New Technical
Standards for construction and all stakeholders should ensure the adjustment of
its structures in compliance with the new requirements.
The Section 11.3.4.5 about welding process, include the following:
"In relation to the type of artifacts made by welded seams, the manufacturer must be
certified according to UNI EN ISO 3834:2006 parts 2 and 4, the level of technical
knowledge of staff for the coordination of welding operations must meet the
requirements of the legislation validated..."
The series of standards UNI EN ISO 3834 − "Quality requirements for fusion
welding of metallic materials" are, to date, the international benchmark for the
certification of welding process management systems.
The standard was designed so that it can be used for manufacture in the factory and in
building site of any kind of fusion welded construction.
The standard is applicable to a wide range of producers who may for example include:
- companies that manufacture welded construction;
- companies making welded structures for traditional plant applications;
- companies operating in the construction of plants (chemical, petrochemical, power generation, steel, etc.).
The standards UNI EN ISO 9001 and UNI EN ISO 3834 fit perfectly the first being on the
management of Quality Systems and the second on the control of welding process.
The UNI EN ISO 3834 can still be self-sufficient, that can be applied alone whenever you
wish to organize and manage the quality of welding operations. In fact, welding as a "special
process" is relevant to the quality of the artefacts, since it can not be controlled
directly but must be built during the production. To this end, special requirements and
controls and appropriate expertise before, during and after production are necessary.
The certification of the company and staff will be operated by a third body, chosen, in the
absence of regulations, by the manufacturer according to criteria of independence and
competence (ref. DM 14/01/2008 - 11.3.4.5).
